Recent advertisements in the Courier and Queenslander announced that the firm of James Burns, of Queensland and Sydney, has amalga- mated with that of Robert Philp, of Towns- ville, etc., under the title of Burns, Philp, and Co., Limited, having places of business at Townsville, Normanton, Burketown, Thursday Island, Cairns, Charters Towers, Sydney, London, and Brisbane. The capital of the company is £250,000, and the business of general merchants, shipping agents, &c., will be carried on at all the places named. The company will possess a fleet of fifteen sailing and six steam vessels, all of which will be em- ployed in the Queensland coasting and lighter- ing trade

Loss OF THE MARQUIS OF LORNE — A telegram received yesterday by the New Zea- land Insurance Company conveys the intel- ligence that on Saturday last the ketch Marquis of Lorne struck a rock about eighteen miles to the north-east of Dunk Island, which is about twenty miles north of Cardwell, and sank in fifteen minutes in seven fathoms of water. It is sup- posed that the captain and crew were saved. The Marquis of Lorne was the pro- perty of Messrs. Burns, Philp, and Co., of Townsville, and was engaged in the beche- de-mer trade. She was built in Brisbane water (N.S.W.) in 1871, and was of 54 tons net re- gister. She was 69ft. long, 18ft. 4in. beam, and 6ft. 6in. depth of hold. The vessel was insured with the New Zealand Insurance Company for £1000.
